Barrel Racing Horse Murrieta, CA

Barrel racing is a rodeo event in which the rider and your horse compete against the clock and other racers. The race uses three barrels placed in a triangular or cloverleaf fashion. The horse and rider must circle these barrels as quickly as possible without knocking them down.

In order to join the competition, the racer should be in perfect condition. The barrel racing horse needs to have the perfect combination of conformation, athleticism, and speed. However, very few horses innately possess that winning combination. That is why riders spend months and even years looking for a good barrel racing horse. Learn about barrel racing here.

Characteristics of a Good Barrel Racing Horse

Not all horses are fit for the race. Here are some of the characteristics that make an ordinary horse a good racehorse:

  • A Well-Balanced Horse

Balance affects the horse’s movement, maneuverability, and power. A balanced racehorse means that he has an equal distribution of muscles and weight to the different parts of his body.

  • A Horse With Racing Experience

A horse with racing experience is ideal for first-time riders. However, some riders prefer inexperienced racehorses because they can train the horses to conform to their riding habits and specifications.

  • A Horse in Its Teens or Twenties

Horses in their teens or twenties run well and can be easier to train. On the other hand, older racehorses with little or no prior training can be a challenge and could take a longer time to train.

  • A Quarter Horse

Though any breed of horse can participate in the race, quarter racehorses are the predominant breed used in rodeo events. This is because quarter horses are one of the most versatile breeds that have the speed and agility to bend around barrels.

What Breeds of Horses Are Good at Barrel Racing?

Other than using quarter horses, riders also prefer other breeds of horses. With proper training, these racehorse breeds can also have an edge in the race. Here are some of those racehorse breeds:

  • Paint Horses

American paint horses are said to be the descendants of the stallions that were brought by Spanish conquistadors in the 1500s. They are known for being friendly and sociable. Paint horses are the easiest to train among other racehorse breeds. They are fast runners and great turners. They can maneuver very well.

  • Grade Horses

Grade horses are said to be crossbreeds and are of unidentifiable lineage. They can have any markings or colors. Some riders may prefer purebred breeds, but others say that grade horses can be good for racing as well.

  • Thoroughbred

These horses are best known as racehorses. They are bred for speed, so it is easy for them to maneuver around the preset barrels of the race track.

  • Appaloosa

Appaloosa horses are suited for cutting, reining, pole bending, and barrel racing. They are mostly used to work on farms or ranches. Appaloosa horses are also known for their mottled skins, striped hooves, and other distinctive coatings.

What Nutrients Are Good for Barrel Racing Horses?

The horse’s diet is also a good factor to consider in producing good barrel racing horses. Since plenty of feeds, supplements, and hay choices are available, some horse owners may find it hard to choose which feed has the right nutrients for their barrel racing horses. Here are the basic nutrients that people should look for in a feed product:

  • Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates provide the horse with digestible energy and adequate energy stores to perform their tasks. Veterinarians and nutritionists suggest that horses should have a diet that is high in fiber but low in sugar and starch. Racehorse owners should check and control the amount of carbohydrates because these can cause horses to gain weight.

  • Vitamins and Minerals

Vitamins and minerals are essential for the growth and metabolism of the racehorse. Without these, the horse will be unable to metabolize carbohydrates, fats, or proteins. The horse’s bone would not be able to support its own weight. Also, its muscles and nerves would not function normally.

Lack of vitamins and minerals can also lead to various health problems, and excessive intake of these may lead to toxicity. This is why horse owners should make sure that the racehorse is getting the right amount of vitamins and minerals.

  • Proteins

Some horse owners tend to feed their racehorse more protein since proteins are known to provide amino acids, which are the building blocks of a horse’s bones, muscles, and tissues. However, racehorse owners should make sure that the horse gets the right amount of protein because consuming too much of it can lead to several diseases.

  • Fats

Fat is the most abundant energy source of a horse’s body, and it is required in absorbing fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, and E. A lot of commercial feeds, such as the ones offered by Elk Grove Milling, are supplemented with fat in the form of stabilized oil. These feeds also contain other nutrients that are needed by the horses.

What Products Are Available at Elk Grove Milling for Barrel Racing Horses?

Elk Grove Milling provides different kinds of feeds and supplements to suit the needs of barrel racing horses. While some feeds are formulated to provide more calories, other feeds contain low carbohydrates. Here are some feed and supplement products that Elk Grove Milling offers:

  • Stable Mix

Stable Mix contains enough fiber for your horse. It also contains almond hulls that provide more calories than hay. Stable Mix comes with all the necessary vitamins and minerals that your horse needs.

  • Stable Mix With Glucosamine and Chondroitin

Glucosamine and chondroitin are said to help in curing or preventing arthritis in horses. The amount of Stable Mix with glucosamine and chondroitin that you should feed to your horse will depend on its weight.

  • Stable Mix Lite

Stable Mix Lite is specially formulated to provide your horse with a low-sugar and -starch diet with all the necessary vitamins and minerals. Horse owners who wish to provide their horse with a nutritionally balanced, low-carbohydrate diet should use this feed.

  • Senior Stable Mix

  • Sport Horse Mix with Glucosamine and Chondroitin

This feed provides balanced vitamins and minerals that are necessary to the health and performance of your horse. Instead of using grains, Sport Horse Mix uses rice bran and copra meal to provide saturated fats. Also, copra meal can help the horse avoid the development of gastric ulcer.

  • Ultra Mate

Ultra Mate is a supplement that is designed to be combined with Stable Mix products. This supplement is formulated to provide extra energy to the horse during racing competitions. Ultra Mate is also good if you want your horse to gain more weight.
