HORSES
& THEIR NEEDS
Page Two
As part of Elk Grove Milling, Inc.'s ongoing
commitment to excellence we have installed Pegasus, a horse
ration program developed by the University of California at
Davis. We have always balanced protein, fat, fiber, ash, and
the calcium:phosphorous ratios. Now we are able to compare
and balance 25 additional nutrients.
Pelleted feeds are preferred by many horse
people as there is no separating of ingredients, and often
less feed is wasted. Pellets produce less dust, a vital asset
for horses which have a history of chronic coughing. Older
horses do better on pellets because they are easier to chew.
The nutrients in Stable
Mix are balanced based on feeding a 1,000 pound
horse which is in a stabled situation.
As conditions change the horse's nutrient needs will also
change. Two examples are:
- A horse in heavy training will need added
energy.
- A growing horse will require added protein.
In all cases Stable Mix is the cornerstone
of our feeding program and it is very easy to adjust the nutrient
needs for each particular case. This gives you, the ranch
manager, the ability toadjust your feeding program as needed.
Using the Pegasus program we can quickly help
you evaluate your feeding program for each type of horse you
are working with. Always follow these import guidelines
in feeding performance horses.
-
Feed each horse individually
-
Feed according to the weight
of the horse
-
Feed according to the amount,
and type of work being done
-
Feed at least twice daily,
three times if possible
-
Remember to have plenty
of clean, fresh water available for the horse at all times.
